Maybe not quite attacked, but harrassed…why doesn’t this stuff happen to me!

Plenty of people go searching for humpback whales as they migrate along Australia’s east coast, but for Jamie Mitchell it was the exact opposite.
The eight-time world paddleboarding champion was filming for a new television project off the north coast of NSW when a pod of whales emerged from the water around him. It was an experience that shocked and thrilled the Queenslander.
“We were just out on the water paddling around and all of a sudden, boom, a whale breached about 100 metres away from me,” he said on Tuesday. “I thought that was pretty cool and then all of a sudden another whale came up right in front of me. “They started playing, putting their tails up in the air and we literally couldn’t get away from them.”
Humpback whales are naturally curious creatures who often interact with humans, but Mitchell says he was a little worried by the massive creatures at first.
“I had the full goosebumps and chicken skin, it was a real adrenalin rush,” he said. “I got the sense though that they knew where I was at all times, it was surreal. “You’d think they’d be scared and go away but I got lucky that these whales wanted to check me out … a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
Mitchell was filming for a documentary series following his life “living in the water”, before heading to California to compete in the Hennesseys International Paddleboard Race.
